String replaceAll() in JavaScript
In this post, we will give you information about String replaceAll() in JavaScript – onlinecode. Here we will give you detail about String replaceAll() in JavaScript – onlinecode And how to use it also give you a demo for it if it is necessary.
To replace a string in JavaScript, you can use the replaceAll()
function.
The first argument is a regular expression/pattern or string that defines what needs to be replaced.
The second argument can either be a string that is the replacement, or a function that will be invoked to create the replacement.
const sentence = 'The world is a cruel place.';
sentence.replaceAll('cruel', 'wonderful'); // The world is a wonderful place.
// Strings are immutable in JavaScript, so the original string stays the same
sentence; // The world is a cruel place.
Keep in mind that replaceAll()
is a relatively new addition to JavaScript, introduced as part of ES2021.
Support for String.prototype.replaceAll()
was introduced in Chrome 85 (August 2020) and Node.js 15.
As of 2022, we do not recommend using replaceAll()
due to limited support.
Use String.prototype.replace()
with a regular expression instead.
const sentence = 'The world is a cruel place.';
sentence.replace(/cruel/g, 'wonderful'); // The world is a wonderful place.
Using a regular expression
You can use a regular expression in place of a string if you want to cover more cases of what needs to be replaced.
It is important to not that your regular expression must have the g
flag enabled.
If not, JavaScript will throw a TypeError
.
const sentence = 'The world is a cruel place. Only cruel people thrive here.';
sentence.replaceAll(/cruel/ig, 'wonderful'); // The world is a wonderful place. Only wonderful people thrive here.
// TypeError: String.prototype.replaceAll called with a non-global RegExp argument
sentence.replaceAll(/cruel/i, 'wonderful');
Using a function
The invoked function runs for every match it finds.
JavaScript calls the function with the below parameters:
- match, what the function found that matched the search criteria.
- pN/$N, where N is the nth string found by a parenthesized capture group. So for example
/(a+)(b+)/
has two. - offset, where in the string the match was found.
- string, the string being examined.
const sentence = 'abcd abcd';
sentence.replaceAll(/(a+)(b+)/ig, function(match, p1, p2, offset, string) {
match; // ab
p1; // a
p2; // b
offset; // 0 then 5 on the next iteration
string; // abcd abcd
return 'Hello';
}) // Hellocd Hellocd
However, when running this example, namedGroups
returns undefined. Could be the parameter is no longer supported.
When replaceAll()
is called with a string, JavaScript calls the replacer function with the below 3 arguments:
- match
- offset
- string
const sentence = 'The world is a cruel place. Only cruel people thrive here.';
sentence.replaceAll('cruel', function(match, offset, string) {
match; // cruel
offset; // 15 then 33
string; // The world is a cruel place. Only cruel people thrive here.
return match.toUpperCase();
}); // The world is a CRUEL place. Only CRUEL people thrive here.
JavaScript Fundamentals for String replaceAll() in JavaScript
JavaScript is a programming language that is used to create interactive web pages. It is a client-side scripting language, which means that it runs on the user’s browser. JavaScript can be used to add animation, interactivity, and functionality to web pages.
Here are some of the fundamentals of JavaScript:
- Variables: Variables are used to store data. They are declared using the
var
keyword. - Data types: JavaScript has a variety of data types, including strings, numbers, booleans, objects, and arrays.
- Operators: Operators are used to perform operations on data.
- Control flow statements: Control flow statements allow you to control the order in which your code is executed.
- Functions: Functions are blocks of code that can be reused.
- Objects: Objects are used to store data in key-value pairs.
- Arrays: Arrays are used to store data in a sequential order.
- Events and event handlers: Events are notifications that are sent by the browser when something happens, such as when the user clicks on an element or moves the mouse over an element. Event handlers are functions that are called in response to an event.
- DOM manipulation: The Document Object Model (DOM) is a tree-like structure that represents the elements of a web page. JavaScript can be used to manipulate the DOM to change the appearance or behavior of a web page.
These are just some of the fundamentals of JavaScript. There are many other concepts that you can learn as you continue to develop your skills.
Here are some resources that you can use to learn more about JavaScript:
- Mozilla Developer Network (MDN): The MDN is a great resource for learning about JavaScript. It has a comprehensive reference guide, tutorials, and articles on a wide range of topics.
- W3Schools: W3Schools is another great resource for learning about JavaScript. It has interactive tutorials and quizzes that can help you learn the basics of the language.
- JavaScript.info: JavaScript.info is a website that provides in-depth tutorials on JavaScript. It also has a forum where you can ask questions and get help from other JavaScript developers.
I hope this helps forĀ String replaceAll() in JavaScript!
Here are some additional tips for learning JavaScript:
- Start with the basics: Before you start trying to build complex applications, it’s important to learn the basics of JavaScript. This includes things like variables, data types, operators, and control flow statements.
- Practice regularly: The best way to learn JavaScript is to practice regularly. Try to find some time each day to work on JavaScript projects.
- Get help from others: If you get stuck, don’t be afraid to ask for help from others. There are many online forums and communities where you can get help from other JavaScript developers.
With a little practice, you’ll be able to learn JavaScript and start building amazing web applications.
